Have a plan to avoid bad practice at the range.

Updated: Feb 22, 2021

In this trying time of ammo being difficult to find and expensive if found, it's crucial to have quality practice. This is done by having a goal for the ammo you plan to shoot when you are training at the range. Sending round after round downrange will by itself not make you a better or more accurate shooter. Break your ammo into chunks that you will have a specific focus with while shooting. Examples are sight picture and trigger control. These basic fundamentals are paramount for placing accurate shots on target.

When I say chunk your ammo I mean segment several rounds to shoot while focusing specifically on your sight picture. How your eye sees the sights, how the sights position on the target and how the sights return to the target after the shot. With only twenty rounds you will notice an improvement by just focusing on this one element.

The same will be found with trigger control. Notice your finger position on the trigger and how it effects your shot. Are you applying smooth, steady pressure to the trigger until the shot surprises you? This surprise will eliminate the low shot impact brought about by anticipating the coming recoil. Again, with only twenty rounds focusing on just this one element errors can be corrected and improvement will be seen on your target.

Individuals only need to slow down and center their focus to one element of making the shot to see remarkable improvement in just one session at the range. With just one box of fifty rounds you'll be surprised at the advancements you will make and you will unknowingly eliminate poor practice and errors that come from fatigue, fatigue coming from thinking "just one more magazine will help make me better". Ending your practice time on a good shot will reinforce positive muscle memory and mental preparation for your next day at the range.

Be safe and keep those groups small!
